Hiab hire and haulage in Truro

Truro is the closest town to us. We are based at Feock, on the Carrick Roads just south of the city, which means a job in Truro is a short run rather than a day out, and it is usually where we can be most flexible about timing.

It is Cornwall's only city and its administrative centre, so there is a steady flow of work here that has nothing to do with tourism: the hospital at Treliske, the retail parks, and the trade counters and yards at Newham and Threemilestone.

Access

The city sits in a hole, and that matters

Truro is built where three river valleys meet, so almost every approach to the centre is downhill, and most of the streets at the bottom were laid out long before anything the size of a lorry existed. Lemon Quay and the streets around the cathedral are tight, loading windows are limited, and a delivery that has to happen in the middle of the day needs planning rather than optimism.

Newham is the opposite: the industrial strip along the river below the city, with proper access, and a good deal of our Truro work starts or ends there. Threemilestone and the estates off the A390 are equally straightforward.

The A390 and the A39 both feed in, and both back up at the usual times. For anything with a fixed slot in the centre we would normally start early and be out before the traffic builds.

The work

What we get called for in Truro

A lot of it is domestic work in the villages and lanes around the city, where a garden room, a hot tub or a load of sleepers has to go over a wall into a back garden because there is no other way in.

The rest is trade: steel into the newer developments around the edges of the city, plant shifted between sites, and containers dropped into yards and onto building plots.

  • Steel and timber into sites around Threemilestone and Newham
  • Containers delivered to yards, plots and farms in the surrounding parishes
  • Plant moved to and from the hire depots on the A390
  • Garden rooms, hot tubs and studios lifted over walls in the older streets
  • Short-notice work, because we are only a few miles away

The lorry

What turns up in Truro

One vehicle: a 30TM HMF hiab with 10 metres of reach on a cheesewedge body, carrying up to 10 tons. It brings the load and lifts it into place, so there is no second machine to arrange and nobody waiting about at either end.

Questions

Common questions about Truro

How quickly can you get to a job in Truro?
Faster than anywhere else we cover, because the yard is at Feock, about five miles south. If something comes up at short notice, Truro is the one place we can often fit in the same day.
Can you deliver into Truro city centre?
Yes, but the timing matters more than the lift. The central streets are narrow with restricted loading, so we would normally look at an early start rather than trying to work around midday traffic.
