Axminster is as far east as Devon goes, sitting on the A35 in the Axe valley with Dorset immediately beyond. It gave its name to the carpets, and it still has genuine manufacturing for a town of its size.

The A35 in, a tight town centre
The A35 is the route and it is adequate, though the stretch through this part of the county is not fast.
The town centre is compact and the streets around the square are narrow, with a steep approach from the river. It is workable but not somewhere to arrive without a plan.
The industrial units on the edge of town are far more straightforward, and the Axe valley lanes are gentler than anything in west Devon.
