Hiab hire and haulage in Callington

Callington is a small town on the A388 between Saltash and Launceston, sitting below Kit Hill in what was once serious mining country. It is agricultural now, and quiet, and the work here reflects that.

It is close enough to Plymouth that a good deal of its trade looks east rather than west.

Access

Fine on the A388, narrow off it

The A388 through the town is adequate, and the centre is small enough to be manageable outside of market times.

The valley itself is the constraint. The lanes down towards the Tamar at Gunnislake and Calstock are steep, narrow and hemmed in, and some of them are genuinely unsuitable for a loaded lorry. We check rather than assume.

Old mining ground is common around here, as it is at Redruth, and the same caution applies to where the outriggers go.

The work

Farming, smallholdings and valley properties

Agricultural work dominates: machinery, containers, feed and water equipment, and the general run of things a farm needs delivered into a yard a lorry cannot turn in.

There is also a steady flow of domestic work in the valley, where properties are often well below the road and a crane is the only realistic way in.

  • Farm machinery and equipment across the Tamar valley
  • Containers onto holdings and smallholdings
  • Lifts into valley properties below road level
  • Materials for renovation work in the villages
  • Work combined with Saltash or Plymouth runs

The lorry

What turns up in Callington

One vehicle: a 30TM HMF hiab with 10 metres of reach on a cheesewedge body, carrying up to 10 tons. It brings the load and lifts it into place, so there is no second machine to arrange and nobody waiting about at either end.

Questions

Common questions about Callington

Can you get down to Calstock or Gunnislake?
Some addresses yes, some no. Those lanes are steep and narrow enough that it genuinely depends on the property, so send a photograph and we will look properly.
Do you do smallholding and farm deliveries?
Regularly. Most farm yards were never laid out for a lorry to reverse into, which is precisely why the crane is useful.

We also cover

Some of these are over the county line, which makes no difference to us: we work both sides of the Tamar and there is no surcharge for crossing it. Each is labelled with the county it is actually in.
