Hiab hire and haulage in Tavistock

Tavistock is a handsome Victorian-fronted market town on the western edge of Dartmoor, and the moor is the thing that shapes the work. Go east from here and the roads climb, narrow and become genuinely exposed within a few miles.

It sits on the A386 between Plymouth and Okehampton, so it is straightforward to reach, and we cover it as part of the same run as Callington and the Tamar valley.

Access

The town is compact, the moor is not forgiving

The centre is tight — the streets around the pannier market and the square were not built with articulated anything in mind — but it is workable outside of market days, which are the days to avoid.

Whitchurch and the edges of the town are easier and have proper access.

East onto the moor is where care is needed. The lanes are narrow and high-hedged before they open out, the weather comes in fast and visibly, and the ground beside a moorland road is very often not solid. We check moor jobs before agreeing a date.

The work

Agriculture, moorland properties and building work

Farms and moorland holdings are the bulk of it: machinery, feed equipment, water tanks and containers dropped into yards that no lorry can turn in.

Tavistock has also had steady residential and barn-conversion work, which brings steel and materials into sites down lanes where the delivery lorry would otherwise have to stop at the gate.

  • Farm machinery and equipment around west Dartmoor
  • Containers onto holdings, yards and building plots
  • Steel and materials for barn conversions and renovations
  • Garden rooms and heavy domestic items lifted over walls
  • Work combined with Callington, Plymouth or Okehampton runs

The lorry

What turns up in Tavistock

One vehicle: a 30TM HMF hiab with 10 metres of reach on a cheesewedge body, carrying up to 10 tons. It brings the load and lifts it into place, so there is no second machine to arrange and nobody waiting about at either end.

Questions

Common questions about Tavistock

Will you go out onto Dartmoor?
Yes, with the route and the ground checked first. The lanes are one issue and the ground beside them is another — outriggers need something solid underneath and moorland verges rarely provide it.
Are market days a problem in town?
They are the days we would rather avoid for anything in the centre. Tell us where the job is and we will suggest a day that works.
