Hiab hire and haulage in Okehampton

Okehampton sits on the A30 at the northern foot of Dartmoor, which makes it a town we pass through constantly on the way between Cornwall and east Devon. That means a job here is often easy to fit into a run that is already happening.

It is an agricultural market town with the moor immediately to the south, and the work splits between farms, the moor and the trade units along the main road.

Access

Fast on the A30, slow off it

The dual carriageway runs right past the town, so the approach is among the quickest of anywhere we cover, and the estates along the Exeter road are easy to reach.

The town centre itself is compact and narrow in the way market towns are, and workable with a bit of care.

South onto the moor the picture changes within a mile or two: narrow lanes, high ground, weather that changes fast, and verges that will not take an outrigger. We plan moorland jobs properly rather than setting off and hoping.

The work

Agriculture, moorland and through-traffic

Farm work dominates: machinery moved between holdings, containers dropped into yards, feed and water equipment delivered where a flatbed would have to stop at the gate.

Because of the road, Okehampton is also a natural staging point, and we frequently pick up or drop here as part of a longer run.

  • Farm machinery and equipment across north Dartmoor
  • Containers onto farms, yards and smallholdings
  • Deliveries to units along the Exeter road
  • Materials into building and conversion sites
  • Loads picked up or dropped as part of an A30 run

The lorry

What turns up in Okehampton

One vehicle: a 30TM HMF hiab with 10 metres of reach on a cheesewedge body, carrying up to 10 tons. It brings the load and lifts it into place, so there is no second machine to arrange and nobody waiting about at either end.

Questions

Common questions about Okehampton

Is Okehampton on your regular route?
Very much so. The A30 through here is the main road between our two counties, so if your timing is flexible there is a good chance we can add your job to a trip already planned.
Will you go up onto the moor from here?
Yes, with the route and ground checked first. Northern Dartmoor has the same issue as the southern side: the lanes are tight and the ground beside them is rarely solid enough for outriggers.
