Hiab hire and haulage in Hayle

Hayle was a foundry town before it was anything else, and the harbour and the estuary still shape how the place works. The redevelopment along the quays has brought a steady run of construction work, and the industrial estate at the top of the town is busy in its own right.

It is also the point where the A30 stops being simple, which is worth knowing when you are booking a delivery here in August.

Access

The causeway and the estuary

Hayle sits either side of an estuary, and the crossings between the two halves of the town are the constraint. Traffic through the middle backs up readily, and in high season it can back up a very long way.

The industrial estate at the top end is easy enough to work in. The harbour and quay areas are more variable: good hardstanding in places, made ground and soft edges in others, and we will always want to know which we are dealing with before the legs go down anywhere near a quay edge.

For anything with a fixed appointment in summer we plan on an early start, because the difference between eight in the morning and eleven here is measured in hours rather than minutes.

The work

Construction, marine and estate work

The redevelopment work around the harbour generates steel, timber and materials that need placing rather than dropping, often on sites hemmed in by water on one side and housing on the other.

Away from that it is the industrial estate, the surrounding farms, and a fair amount of domestic work in the villages between here and St Ives.

  • Steel and materials into harbour-side construction sites
  • Deliveries across the industrial estate
  • Containers onto farms and plots around the estuary
  • Plant moved to and from sites in west Cornwall
  • Domestic lifts in Phillack, Angarrack and the surrounding villages

The lorry

What turns up in Hayle

One vehicle: a 30TM HMF hiab with 10 metres of reach on a cheesewedge body, carrying up to 10 tons. It brings the load and lifts it into place, so there is no second machine to arrange and nobody waiting about at either end.

Questions

Common questions about Hayle

Is quayside ground a problem?
It can be. Quay edges, made ground and old fill all behave differently under outriggers than they look. Tell us where the lorry would stand and we will ask the right questions before committing to it.
How does summer traffic affect a booking?
Mainly by making the morning the only sensible time. We would rather start early and be finished than sit in queues on your time.
