Hiab hire and haulage in Penzance

Penzance is where the A30 finally stops, and it serves everything west of it — Newlyn, Mousehole, St Just, the Land's End peninsula and, by way of the harbour, the Isles of Scilly.

That gives it a particular character for haulage. It is a long way from anywhere, so a wasted trip here costs more than it does elsewhere, and we do more checking before a Penzance job than almost any other.

Access

Long Rock is easy, the old town is tight, Newlyn is its own thing

Long Rock, on the approach into town, is the easy end: modern estates, good access, and where most of the commercial work sits.

The town centre climbs away from the harbour and the streets behind the main road are narrow and steep. Chapel Street and the older quarter need the same treatment as Falmouth — stand on the road, lift over.

Newlyn is a working fishing port with its own rhythm, and the quays are busy with vehicles that have priority over ours. Timing is everything there, and we would always speak to the harbour side of a job before setting a slot.

The work

Harbour, fishing and the far west

Fishing gear, marine equipment, engines and the loads that come off and onto boats are regular work here, as are the pallets and equipment that go out to Scilly through the harbour.

Inland, the peninsula is farms and small villages down single-track lanes, which is a hiab job almost by definition.

  • Marine and fishing equipment around Penzance and Newlyn
  • Freight staged for the Isles of Scilly through the harbour
  • Deliveries across the Long Rock estates
  • Farm and agricultural equipment across the Land's End peninsula
  • Containers into yards and holdings in the far west

The lorry

What turns up in Penzance

One vehicle: a 30TM HMF hiab with 10 metres of reach on a cheesewedge body, carrying up to 10 tons. It brings the load and lifts it into place, so there is no second machine to arrange and nobody waiting about at either end.

Questions

Common questions about Penzance

Is there a surcharge for coming this far west?
No surcharge as such, but distance is part of any price and Penzance is a long run from Truro. The practical answer is that it is worth combining with anything else you need moving in the same direction.
Can you work on the quays at Newlyn?
Yes, with the timing agreed in advance. It is a working port and the fishing traffic comes first, so we plan around it rather than turning up and hoping.
