Hiab hire and haulage in Helston

Helston is the way onto the Lizard peninsula, and that is most of what defines it for us. Beyond the town the roads get narrow quickly and stay that way, and a good proportion of the work here is on farms and in villages where the access has not changed in a century.

The town itself is a market town on a steep hill, with the naval air station at Culdrose immediately to the south.

Access

A steep main street and lanes beyond it

Coinagehall Street runs straight down the hill and is wide by Cornish standards, which helps. The streets either side of it are not, and the older parts of town need the usual care.

The industrial estate on the edge of town is the commercial end and is easy to get in and out of.

South of Helston it changes character completely. The Lizard lanes are high-hedged, single-track for long stretches, and passing places are where you find them. We check a route onto the peninsula properly before committing to it, because turning a loaded lorry round down there is not a realistic option.

The work

Agricultural, domestic and peninsula work

Farm work dominates: equipment, feed bins, water tanks, containers used for storage, and machinery moved between holdings. The crane matters because farm gateways and yards are rarely laid out for a vehicle to reverse into.

There is also a steady run of domestic work in the villages down towards Mullion, Coverack and the Lizard itself, where the access is often worse than in town.

  • Farm machinery and equipment moved between holdings
  • Containers and storage delivered onto farms and smallholdings
  • Water tanks, feed bins and awkward agricultural kit
  • Deliveries across the industrial estate
  • Village and lane work across the Lizard peninsula

The lorry

What turns up in Helston

One vehicle: a 30TM HMF hiab with 10 metres of reach on a cheesewedge body, carrying up to 10 tons. It brings the load and lifts it into place, so there is no second machine to arrange and nobody waiting about at either end.

Questions

Common questions about Helston

Will you go right down the Lizard?
Yes, but we check the route first. Some of those lanes genuinely will not take a loaded lorry, and it is better to know that from a map and a phone call than from a gateway with no way out.
Do you do farm work?
A lot of it. Farm access is exactly what a crane on the lorry is for, because most yards were laid out for a tractor rather than for something that needs a turning circle.
