Hiab hire and haulage in Barnstaple

Barnstaple is the largest town in north Devon and serves the whole of that corner of the county. It sits at the head of the Taw estuary, where the river becomes crossable, and everything commercial in the area is based here or passes through it.

It is the furthest north we go as a matter of routine, reached along the North Devon Link Road from the M5.

Access

The Link Road in, and a river to get across

The A361 North Devon Link Road is the way in from the motorway, and it is a long single carriageway with slow sections. Barnstaple is further from Exeter in time than it looks on a map.

The business parks at Roundswell and Pottington are modern with proper access and are where most of our commercial work happens.

In the town, the river crossings concentrate traffic and the older centre is narrow. The estuary side has soft and made ground in places that needs checking before the legs go down.

The work

Trade, construction and the north coast

Because Barnstaple supplies the whole of north Devon, a lot of the work is trade movement out to somewhere else — materials, plant and equipment collected here and delivered across the region.

The coastal towns beyond, Ilfracombe and Woolacombe among them, have steep and narrow access of the kind that needs a crane rather than a forklift.

  • Deliveries and collections at Roundswell and Pottington
  • Materials and plant distributed across north Devon
  • Steel into construction and conversion sites
  • Containers onto yards, farms and plots
  • Work out to the north coast where access is tight

The lorry

What turns up in Barnstaple

One vehicle: a 30TM HMF hiab with 10 metres of reach on a cheesewedge body, carrying up to 10 tons. It brings the load and lifts it into place, so there is no second machine to arrange and nobody waiting about at either end.

Questions

Common questions about Barnstaple

Is Barnstaple within your area?
Yes, though it is one of the longer runs we do and worth planning. If you have more than one job, or can be flexible on the day, it makes the trip work better for both of us.
Do you go out to Ilfracombe and the coast?
Yes. That coast has some genuinely steep and narrow access, which is exactly the situation a crane on the lorry is for, but photographs of the access help us give you a firm answer.

Some of these are over the county line, which makes no difference to us: we work both sides of the Tamar and there is no surcharge for crossing it. Each is labelled with the county it is actually in.
